Description
A delightful twist on traditional South African bobotie, these meatballs capture the rich flavors of ground meat, spices, and a creamy custard topping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground meat (beef, lamb, or chicken)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp curry powder
- 1/2 cup dried fruit (raisins or apricots)
- 1/4 cup fresh herbs (parsley or cilantro)
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk (or coconut milk)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion until translucent, about 5 minutes, then add garlic and sauté for 1 additional minute.
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, sautéed onion and garlic, curry powder, dried fruit, breadcrumbs, herbs, salt, and pepper. Mix until well integrated without overmixing.
- With wet hands, form the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and milk, seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Pour the egg mixture over the meatballs to create the custard topping.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through and the topping is set and golden.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy with rice or a salad.
Notes
You can substitute ground meat with plant-based alternatives. For added spice, consider adding cayenne pepper or chili flakes.
