- 4 large russet potatoes (or Yukon Golds)
- 2–3 tablespoons butter or vegetable oil
- Salt to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
- Fresh herbs (parsley or chives, optional)
Instructions
- Peel and shred russet potatoes. Rinse under cold water to remove excess starch.
- Drain in a colander and dry thoroughly with a kitchen towel.
- Melt butter or heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Spread shredded potatoes evenly in the skillet and press down gently with a spatula.
- Cook undisturbed for 5-7 minutes until golden brown and crispy on the bottom.
- Flip sections of the hash browns and cook for another 5-7 minutes until golden and crispy on both sides.
- Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with fresh herbs if desired. Serve hot.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding spices like paprika or cayenne pepper. Ensure the skillet is sufficiently hot for ideal crispiness.
