Description

A comforting, versatile gravy that creates rich flavors without relying on meat drippings. Perfect over mashed potatoes, biscuits, or meatloaf.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • Milk or cream, to taste
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh or dried thyme, rosemary, or parsley

Instructions

  1. In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Whisk in the flour to create a roux, stirring for 2-3 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Gradually pour in the broth while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook for about 5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  5. Adjust the consistency with milk or cream, and season with salt, pepper, and herbs.
  6. Taste and modify seasoning as needed. Serve warm.

Notes

For a lighter option, use olive oil instead of butter. This recipe can be made gluten-free by substituting cornstarch mixed with cold water for the flour.
