Description
A comforting, versatile gravy that creates rich flavors without relying on meat drippings. Perfect over mashed potatoes, biscuits, or meatloaf.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
- Milk or cream, to taste
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh or dried thyme, rosemary, or parsley
Instructions
- In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
- Whisk in the flour to create a roux, stirring for 2-3 minutes until lightly golden.
- Gradually pour in the broth while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook for about 5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
- Adjust the consistency with milk or cream, and season with salt, pepper, and herbs.
- Taste and modify seasoning as needed. Serve warm.
Notes
For a lighter option, use olive oil instead of butter. This recipe can be made gluten-free by substituting cornstarch mixed with cold water for the flour.
