Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
- Gradually alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, mixing until just combined.
- Divide batter between prepared pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Whip heavy cream with sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
- Assemble the cake by layering frosting between the two cake layers, frosting the top and sides, and garnishing with chocolate ganache if desired.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Sift dry ingredients to lighten the cake. Monitor baking time and avoid overmixing the batter.
