Description
Delightful scones combining the warm spices of chai with the bright zest of fresh orange, perfect for afternoon tea or brunch.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or 1 cup all-purpose flour and 1 cup whole wheat flour)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (or coconut/brown sugar)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold, cubed
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk/non-dairy option)
- 1 tablespoon chai spices (cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves)
- 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest (or lemon zest)
- 1 egg (or flax egg for vegan option)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and lay parchment paper on your baking sheet.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and chai spices until combined.
- Cut cold, cubed butter into the dry mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the orange zest. In a separate bowl, combine the cream and egg, then add to the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface, gently knead a few times, and shape into a mound about 1-inch thick. Cut into wedges or round shapes.
- Transfer shaped scones to the baking sheet, brush tops with cream, and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool for a few minutes on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
Use cold butter for flaky layers; consider adding a glaze of powdered sugar and orange juice for extra flavor.
