  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • Cream cheese frosting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream together softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
  5. Gradually incorporate the sifted dry ingredients and drizzle in red food coloring while mixing.
  6. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Scoop out tablespoon-sized balls of dough, place on the baking sheet, and bang gently against the counter.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are set and the center remains soft.
  9. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Frost with cream cheese frosting if desired.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour. Consider using Dutch-processed cocoa for a richer flavor.
