A warm, indulgent treat that combines rich chocolate with homemade salted caramel, perfect for cozy winter days.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups whole milk
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips
- ¼ cup granulated sugar (or to taste)
- 1 cup sugar (for caramel)
- ¼ cup water (for caramel)
- ½ cup heavy cream (for caramel)
- ¼ teaspoon flaky sea salt (for caramel)
- Flaky sea salt (for topping)
- Whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Caramel: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of sugar and ¼ cup of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves, then stop stirring and allow it to boil until it turns a deep amber color. Remove from heat and stir in ½ cup of heavy cream and ¼ teaspoon of sea salt.
- Make the Hot Cocoa: In another saucepan, combine 2 ½ cups of milk and ¼ cup of cocoa powder. Mix it well and heat over medium heat, stirring continuously. After it’s warmed, add ½ cup of chopped chocolate and ¼ cup of sugar, stirring until melted and smooth.
- Combine the Flavors: Once the hot cocoa is ready, stir in about ½ cup of the salted caramel sauce.
- Serve and Enjoy: Pour into cups, top with whipped cream if desired, drizzle more caramel over the top, and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
