- 4 large russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 ½ cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 2 tablespoons butter, for greasing
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme or rosemary, chopped
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Thinly slice the potatoes to about a quarter of an inch thick.
- In a bowl, mix heavy cream, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and chopped herbs.
- Layer one third of the potatoes in the baking dish, pour one third of the cream mixture over them, and sprinkle with a layer of cheese.
- Repeat the layering process until you have three layers, finishing with cheese on top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-30 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving and garnish with fresh herbs.
Notes
Ensure potato slices are uniform for even cooking. Allow resting time after baking for easier serving.
