Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Food coloring (red and green)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon almond extract, ¼ cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, adding almond extract if desired.
  4. Whisk together the flour and baking powder, then gradually add to the butter mixture.
  5. Divide the dough in half and color one half with food coloring, kneading until the color is even.
  6. Roll out each colored dough into rectangles and layer them, rolling tightly into a log.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes until firm.
  8. Slice into ¼ inch rounds and bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden around the edges.
  9. Cool on a wire rack and decorate as desired.

Notes

Ensure butter is at room temperature for best results; chill dough thoroughly before baking to prevent spreading.
