Description

A flavorful and heartwarming stuffing made with artisan sourdough, fresh herbs, and sautéed mushrooms, perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf artisan sourdough bread, cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter (or olive oil for vegan option)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 2 cups mushrooms (cremini or shiitake), chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh sage, chopped
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth, heated
  • 1 egg, whisked

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Cut the artisan sourdough into cubes and let them dry overnight or lightly toast them in the oven.
  2. Sauté the aromatics: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and celery, sauté for about 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the mushrooms and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add garlic and herbs: Once mushrooms are golden, add the minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, and sage. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Combine with bread: In a large bowl, mix the sautéed mixture with the dried sourdough cubes, tossing gently to combine.
  5. Moisten with broth: Gradually add the heated broth until the bread is moistened without becoming soggy.
  6. Bind with egg: Whisk the egg in a small bowl and add to the stuffing mix to bind the ingredients.
  7. Transfer and bake: Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 baking dish, cover with foil, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes for a crispy top.
  8. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving alongside your favorite holiday dishes.

Notes

For gluten-free, substitute gluten-free sourdough or alternative bread. You can also incorporate roasted butternut squash or diced apples for added flavor.
