Description
A flavorful and heartwarming stuffing made with artisan sourdough, fresh herbs, and sautéed mushrooms, perfect for holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf artisan sourdough bread, cubed
- 4 tablespoons butter (or olive oil for vegan option)
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 cup celery, diced
- 2 cups mushrooms (cremini or shiitake), chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
- 1 teaspoon fresh sage, chopped
- 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth, heated
- 1 egg, whisked
Instructions
- Prepare the bread: Cut the artisan sourdough into cubes and let them dry overnight or lightly toast them in the oven.
- Sauté the aromatics: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and celery, sauté for about 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the mushrooms and sauté until golden brown.
- Add garlic and herbs: Once mushrooms are golden, add the minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, and sage. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Combine with bread: In a large bowl, mix the sautéed mixture with the dried sourdough cubes, tossing gently to combine.
- Moisten with broth: Gradually add the heated broth until the bread is moistened without becoming soggy.
- Bind with egg: Whisk the egg in a small bowl and add to the stuffing mix to bind the ingredients.
- Transfer and bake: Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 baking dish, cover with foil, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes for a crispy top.
- Serve: Let cool slightly before serving alongside your favorite holiday dishes.
