- 8 cups sturdy bread, cubed (sourdough or ciabatta)
- 2 cups fresh cranberries
- 2 cups diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh sage, chopped
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1/4 cup butter (or olive oil for dairy-free)
- 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the bread by cutting it into cubes and letting it dry overnight or toasting it at low heat for 15 minutes.
- Sauté the onion in butter over medium heat until soft, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté for another minute.
- Combine the dried bread cubes, sautéed onions, cranberries, apples, and nuts in a large bowl.
- Add the broth and mix until damp but not soggy. Season with herbs, spices, salt, and pepper.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) in a greased dish, covered with foil for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Rest the stuffing for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
You can substitute dried cranberries if fresh are unavailable, but adjust the sugar accordingly. Experiment with herbs and nuts to personalize the dish.
