- 4 slices American cheese
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 thick slices of rye or sourdough bread
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 tablespoons diced pickles
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Butter for toasting
Instructions
- Prepare the secret sauce: In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and pickles.
- Form the patties: Divide the ground beef into equal portions and form into patties, about ¾ inch thick.
- Sauté the onions: In a skillet, add oil or butter and cook the sliced onions until soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
- Cook the patties: In the same skillet, cook the burger patties seasoned with salt and pepper for about 4-5 minutes on each side. Add cheese during the last minute.
- Toast the bread: Butter the outsides of the bread slices and toast in another skillet until golden brown.
- Assemble the patty melt: Spread secret sauce on one side of each bread piece, add a patty, sautéed onions, and top with the other slice.
- Grill to perfection: Grill the assembled sandwich until both sides are golden brown, about 3-4 minutes each.
